David LaMotte will perform at Virginia Western Community College Whitman Auditorium on Friday, September 6, 2002 at 7:30 PM. Admission is $10. Net proceeds from this event will benefit LVA-Roanoke Valley.
A former resident of the Roanoke Valley, LaMotte now lives in Montreat, North Carolina. Often described as “New Folk,” his music ranges from driving, percussive songs to more introspective and melodious pieces, with influences from rock to blues to bluegrass. He throws in an occasional mind-bending instrumental and a healthy dose of story-telling and humor to tie these styles together. LaMotte has performed over 1500 shows in 42 states and ten countries. Over 20,000 copies of his seven CDs have sold.
LaMotte is a featured artist on the CD, “Songs Inspired by Literature – Chapter One,” a creation of the SIBL (Songs Inspired by Literature) Project in California, a non-profit organization that uses music to “engage, inspire and reinforce the magic of literature and the power of reading.” The SIBL Project held an international songwriting competition in which over 350 songwriters from 38 states and 10 countries participated. LaMotte’s winning song, “Dark and Deep,” was inspired by Robert Frost’s poem, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”
The stated purpose of the CD is “to raise awareness and funds for adult literacy programs that teach adults basic reading and writing skills for free.” Other artists on the CD include Bruce Springsteen, Suzanne Vega, Ray Manzarek, Grace Slick and Aimee Mann. Net proceeds from purchases of the SIBL CD from LVA-Roanoke Valley will benefit LVA-Roanoke Valley.
Tickets and CDs can be purchased before the event from LVA-Roanoke Valley or at the event itself.
