Zuhdija Lucanin received the 2002 Sig Davidson Learner of the Year Award for ESOL and April Overstreet received the same award for Basic Literacy at the annual cookout on June 9th at Wasena Park. These two learners both achieved major goals and demonstrated significant advancement in the 2001-02 fiscal year. Over 120 people – learners, tutors, other volunteers, board members, staff, and their families and friends – witnessed these two honorees receive their awards.

These two rose to the top of a field of very fine nominees, who received certificates of recognition at the event. The learner of the year nominees in the Basic Literacy Program were Elizabeth Bartleson, Lois Glass, Eddie Jones, Hazel McFalls, Wayne Moran,

Ron, who has worked in the Basic Literacy Program for over three years, has helped his most recent learner make remarkable progress in the past year. Ron is also a board member and the co-chair of this year’s book sale committee. Both of these tutors deserve a hearty congratulations.

The two tutor honorees make great representatives of the fine folks who become volunteer tutors in general. LVA-RV is so fortunate to have so many hard-working and dedicated people who are willing to volunteer. The tutor of the year nominees also outstandingly represent the people who give so much to the learners in our programs. The Basic Literacy nominees were Jane Bailey, Cathy Bliley, Donna David, Nicole Crawford, Betty Jo Hayes, Cathy Nelson, Carol Ornes, Dennis Pendleton, Vicki Pierce, Karen Recknor, Ginger Turner, Stuart Wamsley, and Nancy Wellford. on the Strategic Planning Committee, the Program Committee, and the Book Sale Committee. His past experience as President and CEO of Virginia Lutheran Homes has positioned him to play a leadership role in policy and decision making at LVA-Roanoke Valley. His willingness to help out in so many aspects of LVA-Roanoke Valley is remarkable. He can open his mind to the big picture as well as examine policy documents in detail. When he does a job, he’s thorough, whether he’s reconciling the bank statements or organizing the collection boxes for the book sale. LVA-Roanoke Valley is very fortunate to have such a dedicated, wise, kind, and fun man as Floyd in its ranks. On top of all that he does as a board member, Floyd’s a tutor in the Basic Literacy Program, too!  Thanks, Floyd, and congratulations.

Board Members Pat Dungan and Chuck Hale

A big thanks to all the volunteers who helped to make the cookout a success. Board members Pat Dungan and Chuck Hale did the grilling. Libby Dungan helped set up and monitor the food table as well as bringing her delicious potato salad. Carolyn Riddleberger, board president, and Judy Underwood from Bank of America presented the many door prizes. They also brought the burger fixings. Rob Moorefield and Cameron Schlueter personed the sign-in table. Jim Schlueter helped set up tables and chairs and assisted the clean up. Ron and Faye Swenson assisted in the set up and clean up. A special thanks to Rose Early-Willey from Bank of America for providing the cake and the entire Crossroads Branch of Bank of America staff for their work on door-prize donations. Thanks also to Papa John’s and Domino’s for their kind pizza donations.

We all had a great time at the cookout. It's always good to have so many people turn out for this event. If you didn't come out to this year's cookout, make plans now to attend the event next June.
