On August 2nd, Dawn Pellas from WSLS Channel 10’s Education Team came to the LVA-RV Learning Center and interviewed tutor Claire Blake and learners Travis Crowe and Rockey Williams for a segment that aired on their six o’clock news broadcast that evening. Rockey, who is the 2001 Dudley Woody Learner of the Year, read from his piece, “Thank God for the Lighthouse,” from this year’s Writing from the Heart. Rockey also spoke about his work in the program and the impact that his improving literacy skills has had on him and his family. Rockey read and spoke eloquently, continuing to inspire others in the valley to enter our program as both tutors and learners. He is a great spokesperson for our program.
Claire and Travis, the 1998 Sig Davidson Tutor and Dudley Woody Learner of the Year, have worked together for over four years. With Claire’s excellent help, Travis’s improvement has been dramatic as he moves closer and closer to reaching his goal to earn a GED. Dawn Pellas interviewed this pair as they worked together at the learning center, giving viewers an opportunity to see the tutor-learner relationship in action, providing an image of a collaborative team working toward a common goal. These two also make great spokespeople for our program.
Several people, both potential learners and volunteers, called after seeing this news segment to get information about becoming a part of LVA-Roanoke Valley. We appreciate learners like Travis and Rockey and tutors like Claire who are willing to share their stories publicly.
