On December 26, 2001, Dawn Pellas, from WSLS Channel 10's Education Team, returned to the LVA-RV Learning Center to observe an ESOL class and interview ESOL tutor Pam Reilly and her learner Zuhdija Lucanin. A news segment about the interview and the need for tutors aired that evening on the six o' clock broadcast.
In her interview with Dawn, Pam offered her reflections on her tutoring experience that should motivate new volunteers to get involved as well as help them get over their apprehension about tutoring adults, saying "It makes me feel so good to share some of my language with my learner and to see him speaking it." She continues: "Not only are you giving back to your community, but you have an opportunity to really develop a friendship. I really feel [Zuhdija] is my friend."
Meanwhile, ESOL Program Coordinator, , conducted a class for ESOL learners, exposing the Channel 10 audience to the dynamics of the LVA-Roanoke Valley Learning Center. Several ESOL learners participated in the class. They were Otto Gomez, Sonoko Kubota, and Linda Shen. The class acted as the perfect backdrop for the interview with Pam and the images from Pam and Zuhdija's tutoring session.
We certainly appreciate Dawn Pellas and WSLS Channel 10 for their continuing coverage of our program (Click here to read the story of her previous visit). This news broadcast brought in calls from both potential volunteers and learners alike. We'd also like to thank Pam, Zuhdija, Otto, Sonoko, and Linda for their willingness to represent LVA-Roanoke Valley on television.
