Introduction to Computers and Computer Vocabulary

 

Objectives:

The learner will correctly identify, spell and pronounce parts of a computer work station.

bullet

The learner will correctly verbalize commands using "point to" "click on," "go to," "push" and "find."

Duration:

 

     2 hours

Activities:

 

High-Beginning and Low-Intermediate Learners:

  1. Learners take the computer skills assessment inventory.

  2. Teacher models expectations by identifying parts of computer using workstation vocabulary, flashcards and commands.

  3. Learners identify parts of computer using vocabulary and commands through uses of substitution drill.

  4. Paired learners write names of parts of the computer and place them at correct locations at workstation.

High-Intermediate Learners:

 

Objectives:

The learner will perform self assessment of irregular verbs.

bullet

The learner will use irregular verbs in written and spoken sentences

bullet

The learner will copy, paste and save an irregular verb reference sheet into a word processing file.

bullet

The learner will begin a Web project applying grammar and Internet search skills (see directions on the Web Project assignment sheet).

Activities:

 

Learners follow this sequence of activities for 30-60 minutes at the beginning of each lesson, continuing until completion of the list:

  1. Teacher introduces learners to the Irregular Verb Page.

  2. Learners print Basic Irregular Verbs 1 sheet and conduct an independent self-assessment (answers found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

  3. Learners compose a sentence for each verb they missed; teacher checks for accuracy.

  4. Learner pairs continue self-assessment by orally quizzing each other, with each learner making note of the verbs missed by the other; continue until learner misses 5 verbs. Each learner uses the correct verb form in a sentence of their own composition and reads sentence aloud to partner. Teacher supervises and checks sentences for accuracy.

  5. Learners copy and paste the Irregular Verb Page into a word processing file, print and place in notebook for continued reference.

  6. Learners play Irregular Verb Jeopardy, keeping track of score for each game.

  7. Learners begin the Web Project as described in project directions.

Assessment:

 

High-Beginning and Low-Intermediate Learners: Teacher conducts chain drill using computer component flash cards, making notes of learner progress.

 

High-Intermediate Learners: Teacher observes learner progress, making note of problem areas and providing correction and additional practice as required.
