Making a Doctor's Appointment over the Phone

Activities:

1. Teacher introduces lesson by beginning a class discussion using the following questions: a) "Do you visit the doctor every year?", "Why or why not?" b) "Who has made an appointment over the phone in English?", "Was it difficult or easy?"

2. Teacher distributes folded copies of Making a Doctor's Appointment Over the Phone worksheet, directing students to listen while the teacher reads the dialogue. Teacher may have to read the dialogue two or more times

3. Learners respond to questions 1-4 on their worksheet.

4. Learners unfold their worksheets and fill in the blanks in the dialogue at the bottom the the page.

5. After 10 minutes, learners compare answers to both parts of the worksheet.

6. Teacher (or two learners with 100% accuracy) re-reads the dialogue.

7. Teacher allows time to address questions about phrases and word usage.

8. Teacher assigns pairs and directs learners to role play their own dialogues. Teacher gives the following instructions: a) Learners will sit facing away from each other during the activity b) Learners will have 10 minutes to plan their conversations c) Learners will not write their conversations d) patient and receptionist will talk about the reason for the visit and set a time and date for the visit.

9. Learner pairs role play their conversations.

10. Teacher conducts comprehension check following each conversation.  

Assessment:

Listening comprehension goal is 75% accuracy of objective and fill in responses on worksheet. Teacher checks listening comprehension of role play activity by monitoring individual oral responses folowing each conversation.
