The
following curriculum framework and pacing guide outlines Health and
Healthcare, Literacy Volunteers’ third six-week EL/Civics session,
which began in mid-September, 2002. Unlike sessions 1 and 2, this session
is a single session devoted exclusively to healthcare and related grammar
skills. Users will find below a short description of each lesson and an
accompanying timeline for this
class of intermediate level English learners. Virtually all of the materials
and activities described here are easily adapted to meet the needs of learners at other
levels of competency.
Health and Healthcare borrows from portions of the two previous sessions
while adding a number of new lessons. Like its predecessors, this session
will build basic health and healthcare vocabulary and questioning skills
within the context of authentic situations. However, special emphasis has
been placed upon extending previous skills acquisitions into the area of
verbal communication. As a result, the lessons in this session are weighed
heavily in favor of speaking and listening activities featuring learner
dialogues.
Detailed descriptions of the lessons used
throughout this session may be found
by going to the
E/L Civics Complete Lesson Plan Index and clicking on the appropriate
subject. Tutors with questions about this session's activities, their
sequence or how to apply them to single- and paired–learner environments
may call the Literacy Volunteers ESOL coordinator at 265-9339, Mondays
through Fridays, or use
e-mail anytime.
