Activities:

  1. Teacher introduces lesson by asking how many learners have been to a job interview. Teacher begins think-pair-share activity by asking 1) "What do you do to prepare for a job interview?" and 2) "What don't you do in a job interview?" Give learners 5-8 minutes to discuss and write responses. Class discusses answers.

  2. Teacher shares 3-5 humorous job interview stories. Class compares their "job interview don'ts" list with what happened in the stories. Teacher models correct "Dos and Don'ts List" format on white board or chart paper.

  3. Learners use Internet to access "Dos and Don'ts in a Job Interview". Learners copy and paste Internet document into a word processing file and add their own "dos and don'ts" if they are not included in the list. Learners copy the completed list to the computer desktop and print the file.

  4. Teacher introduces gerunds and infinitives by asking learners what they like and don't like. Teacher creates two columns on the board and sorts responses accordingly, making sure each response ends in -ing. Over the two columns, teacher creates a continuum from left to right with the words "love," "like," "enjoy," "don't mind," "dislike," "hate" and "can't stand." Teacher conducts substitution drill, pointing to each item and to the correct person; learners choose a word from the continuum to complete their response. Afterward, teacher defines a gerund and writes its definition on the board. Teacher writes definition of an infinitive on the board and compares the two.

  5. Learners complete "Lesson 2, Job Skills and Preferences," pgs. 103-105 in Stand Out 3.

  6. Learners complete online "Gerund or Infinitive Quiz".

  7. Learners read online "Job Interview" and answer comprehension questions.

Assessment:

Teacher monitors quality of verbal responses providing correction where necessary, evaluates quiz results.
