highlighting differences between simple declarative sentences and imperative
forms using same verb and object.
-
Teacher reviews map activity, part 2, Oxford Picture Dictionary, p. 107
and vocabulary (i.e.,
"block, "tracks," "U-turn," etc.).
-
Teacher introduces and defines lesson
vocabulary. Students demonstrate comprehension through use of total body
response and correct placement of random objects relative to each other.
-
Teacher
distributes Roanoke Valley maps; learners choose one origin and one
destination from an envelope.
-
Learners
locate their origins and destinations on their maps and write directions
using lesson vocabulary and proper command (imperative) format.
-
Teacher
assigns pairs, learners take turns giving directions and plotting directions
on maps. Learners collaborate to make corrections as needed.
-
Three
learners volunteer to give directions to the class; class traces each
route.
-
Teacher
distributes Map Activity Dialogue sheet. Teacher models dialogue by
selecting learners to take turns reading from each part. Learners review
vocabulary.
-
Teacher
distributes copies of Yellow Pages business ads. Learners choose two
locations, finding directions from one to the other and including them in a dialogue
of their own.
-
Learners
choose a partner, practice the dialogue, then perform it for the class.
Learners giving directions reveal the names of the businesses they chose;
whole class follows each route on their maps.
-
Each learner pair checks their directions with
those provided by Yahoo!Maps. Whole class compares, discusses the
results.

Teacher monitors verbal and written responses of individual students.
