Activities:
-
Teacher
distributes "Managing Family Life" lesson packet, explaining
purpose of the lesson and lesson format.
-
Teacher
introduces lesson vocabulary, adding the verbs "own,"
"rent," and "lease." Teacher models pronunciation and
learners pronounce terms.
-
Learners
view video and read dialogue through p. 4, then answer and discuss questions
1-10, p.5.
-
Learners
view video without sound and without reading script on pgs. 5-6. Teacher asks class, "What
is happening in the story?" Learners hypothesize about what they see,
share their thoughts and take turns reading the script. Learners view the
video with audio on.
-
Class
completes activities on p.7; teacher defines unfamiliar terms.
-
Class
listens to Wizard's introduction of "must" and "have to"
(script on p.8). Teacher drills class using
chain drill with
"have to" and "must," pgs. 8-9 (i.e., Teacher:
"I have to work today. Do you have to work today?" Learner A:
"Yes I do/No I don't. Do you/does she/do they have to work today?"
Learner B: No, I don't/Yes, I do. Does he or she/do they have to work
today?" etc.). If necessary, teacher reviews method for
formatting questions before conducting drill. Learners
complete questions 1-15, pgs.9-10.
-
Class
reads script from p.10 to Wizard's part on p.11. Class listens to audio
without picture, then discusses what has happened. Class discussion should
focus on the importance of reading a contract before signing it. Class views
video with audio and picture. Video continues, stopping at scene with
Katrina and Samantha at the dance studio. Teacher asks learners if they have
signed a lease or rental agreement, and the steps they took to make sure
they understood the terms of the contract. Teacher asks if anyone has had a
disagreement with a landlord where they had to refer to the contract to find
out who was at fault.
-
Class
takes turns reading script for final portion of the video. Teacher resumes
video at the dance studio (p.12) with sound and picture, playing it until
the episode ends. Teacher asks class how they can find out about renter's
rights. Responses will vary from "friends" to
"lawyers." Teacher introduces Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) and explains that there will be time later to go to
the HUD Web site.
-
Learners
complete questions 1-10, p. 14, then accesses the on-line "has/have
to" and "don't/doesn't have to" quiz at The English Zone.
Teacher assigns pairs; paired learners compare answers. Class corrects and
discusses quiz and questions 1-10.
